Buhari Honors Sports Heroes At State House

President Muhammadu Buhari honored several athletes and sports icons at the State House. Among the athletes present was the 1985 Class of U-16 boys who won the inaugural FIFA Cadet World Cup title when Buhari was a military Head of State.

 

Also present were men and women basketballers, powerlifter, world scrabble champion Wellington Jighere, boxer Olanrewaju Durodola, the U-17 world champion footballers, and the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations winners.
 
The ceremony, which was brief but impressive, was attended by the Diplomatic Corps and other officials.

Monetary rewards were also handed out to the athletes, including N2 million for each of the 1985 FIFA U-16 World Cup winners, N1.2 million for the 2015 FIFA U-17 world champions, and N500,000 for each of the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations winners.

The President commended the efforts of the assembled athletes but urged them to continue to push for excellence.

President Buhari also paused for a moment of silence for the late Kingsley Aikhiobare, a member of the U-16 boys who died in 1996.

CBN Security Guard Arrested for Stealing Specimen Naira Currency Notes

Vatasama Danladi Vatasama Danladi, a security guard attached to the Central Bank of Nigeria has been arraigned for stealing specimen Naira currency notes. Danladi got into trouble after he deposited the stolen specimen naira notes amounting to N299,000 at Guarantee Trust Bank's ATM deposit machines in Karu and Mararaba sometime in January 2016. He got into legal trouble when the bank found the 299 pieces of N1000 marked “specimen” during a process of cash count sometime in January.   He appeared before Justice Kolo of Abuja High Court yesterday where he pleaded not guilty. In view of his plea, counsel to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Counsel, EFCC, Andrew Akoja, urged the court to remand the accused and fix a date for trial.

A man has meted out the most heinous form of punishment to his lover on Valentine's Day for allegedly turning down his request.    A student of Psychology Department of University of Jos, Miss Zakariah Nanchin, has been reportedly killed by a man believed to be her lover, for purportedly turning down his Valentine Day’s outing invitation.   Nanchin was allegedly strangled to death by her lover, one Badung David Dele on Monday, the day after Valentine at her Angwa Rukuba apartment in Jos.   According to The Nation, Dele was said to have reached out to Nanchin apparently to settle their differences and invited her out for Valentine. Dino Melaye Didn't Graduate from ABU - Sahara Reporter's Publisher Maintains Stand
